First Congress of Rabbis of Russia Concludes
S. PETERSBURG, Russia – The first Congress of Rabbis of Russia finished yesterday in S. Petersburg. The goal of the gathering was to discuss ways to strengthen Jewish pride and expand Jewish education throughout Russia.

116 years ago, on December 8th 1893 the Grand Choral Synagogue of St.-Petersburg was officially inaugurated and consecrated.

Synagogue Marks Jewish Birthdays
S. PETERSBURG, Russia – The Jewish community of S. Petersburg, together with the Great choral Synagogue, is undertaking an initiative that has touched the hearts of many Jewish residents of Russia’s northern capital. Namely, this undertaking involves sending congratulation letters to members of the Jewish community, and especially those who are elderly, on the occasion of their respective Jewish birthdays.

In Jerusalem, a celebration was held for the commencement of the writing of a new Torah scroll. This event took place in the newly-restored Synagogue at the Western (Wailing) Wall, where those onlookers witnessing this joy certainly could not have known that this ceremony was linked to a very distant place – Russia’s northern capital.

Jewish Student Takes Top Award in S. Petersburg
S. PETERSBURG, Russia – For one Jewish student in S. Petersburg, his day has come to be champion of a regional competition of young computer programmers, known as 'Supercode 2008' and organized by the Intel Corporation. This is a preliminary contest that will bring the top minds from across Russia into the next level of the competition, which is country-wide.  

In S. Petersburg, Holocaust Past Inspires Action Today
S. PETERSBURG, Russia - A solemn meeting took place in S. Petersburg to commemorate the 'Yom Hashoa', the Day in Memory of Holocaust Victims. The event took place at the 'Preborazhenskiy' Jewish Cemetery and was led by Alexander Frenkel, the Director of the Jewish Community Center.

S. PETERSBURG, Russia — Crowds gathered in Great Choral Synagogue this week to celebrate bringing in a new Torah scroll, which was donated to the Jewish community of S. Petersburg by four sponsors. The generosity of Mikhail Prince, Yakov Shuster, David Tsaturov, and Yoram Borisov ensured that this scroll would be written especially in the holy city of Jerusalem.

S. PETERSBURG, Russia – As part of ongoing activities encouraging Jewish youth to uphold their national traditions, the Jewish community of S. Petersburg and the Great Choral Synagogue held a seminar on the outskirts of Russia's northern capital.  

FSU Jewish School Directors Convene in S. Petersburg
S. PETERSBURG, Russia – Russia's northern capital has just wrapped up a major conference for directors from Jewish schools across the Former Soviet Union. In attendance were 45 school leaders from five different countries – Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Latvia and Kazakhstan. The event was hosted by the 'Beit Menachem' Day School, which is considered to be one of the most modern and progressive Jewish schools in the entire CIS.  

Jewish Youth Program Stimulates Wedding Fervor
S. PETERSBURG, Russia – The Jewish community of S. Petersburg has good reason for celebration with a detailed ceremony to mark the marriage of two local young Jews – Asya Diop and Yevgeniy Slutskiy. The bride and groom met one another through the 'STARS' educational program, which involves youth and students residing in Russia's northern capital and allows them to discover their Jewish heritage, traditions, philosophy and Judaism.  

S. Petersburg Community Honors Jewish Veterans
S. PETERSBURG, Russia – The Jewish community of S. Petersburg has staged an event to honor its veterans, including both those who served in World War Two and those who served in various capacities on the home front. The event, hosted by the Great Choral Synagogue, took place in the lead-up to the anniversary of the S. Petersburg Blockade. Honored guests then gathered at the 'Lechaim' restaurant, where they enjoyed a delicious kosher feast in good company.

S. PETERSBURG, Russia – This week, the Jewish community of S. Petersburg just became a bit stronger in the services it provides thanks to a dynamic new approach to helping its community members.  

S Petersburg Jewish Community Aids the Homeless
In honor of the 'Day of the Homeless', the Jewish community of S. Petersburg has carried out an initiative jointly with one other non-governmental organization 'New Social Resolution'. Very active locally in working with the homeless, this non-commercial organization also publishes a journal entitled “The Way Home”. On this occasion, the two forces joined efforts in a project aimed at distributing fruit among the homeless of Russia's northern capital.  

“To Russia with Gloves”
The richest Jews of Great Britain came to St.-Petersburg in retro cars A motorcade consisting of fanciful retro cars drove into St.-Petersburg June, 9. St.-Petersburg was the finishing point of the car rally, which started in England and included capitals of five countries. The rally, whose motto was “To Russia with Gloves”, was initiated by Jewish National Fund of Britain. Its participants were the richest Jews of England, owners of antique and retro cars.  

Bar-Mitzvah Celebration in Saint-Petersburg
Large-scale public Bar / Bat-Mitzvah celebration for city’s Jewish children took place in St.-Petersburg Grand Choral Synagogue May 21. The ceremony was attended by parents, community leaders and members. The thirteen-year-olds were publicly called to the Torah for an alyah, gave their Bar-mitzvah speech and got their Bar-Mitzvah presents from the Jewish community.

Volunteering at Jewish Cemetery Shows True Community Spirit
Hundreds of Saint-Petersburg Jews joined the volunteer work party at Preobrazhenskoe Jewish Cemetery April, 15. They were called upon to support this worthy undertaking by Chief Rabbi of Saint-Petersburg Menachem-Mendel Pewzner. “As our Sages say, doing kindness to those who are dead and cannot repay you, is the act of real mercy”, - the Rabbi pointed out in his appeal to Saint-Petersburg Jewry.  

Tourist season opens in St-Petersburg Synagogue
Tourist season has officially opened in the Grand Choral Synagogue. The opening ceremony took place on April, 16. Among invited guests were representatives of various tourist companies of Saint-Petersburg – partners of the Synagogue, both actual and prospective.  

New Community Center Opens in Saint-Petersburg
MAOR, the city’s largest Jewish Community Center was officially inaugurated in Saint-Petersburg in December. It hosts Jewish kindergarten “Haya Mushka”, Jewish day school “Menachem” and a number of community programs for people of different ages. Its premises include a prayer hall, a kosher kitchen, computer classrooms, an art studio, a library, and a gymnasium. The spacious newly-decorated four-storey MAOR building has a rather complicated history.
