S. PETERSBURG, Russia - A solemn meeting took place in S. Petersburg to commemorate the 'Yom Hashoa', the Day in Memory of Holocaust Victims. The event took place at the 'Preborazhenskiy' Jewish Cemetery and was led by Alexander Frenkel, the Director of the Jewish Community Center. Participants heard a talk by a Holocaust survivor - Lev Emmanuilovich - who was living in the Ukrainian city of Chernovtsiy when World War Two broke out and was eventually sent to the ghetto near Mogilev-Podolska. He spoke candidly about his tragic childhood recollections and used his experiences to share an inspiring message to everyone gathered on this day. The choir performed songs in Yiddish between |

presentations, the main one of which was given by Chief Rabbi of S. Petersburg Menachem Mendel Pewzner. "There is no point in simply pouting about those tragic occurrences and that is why we will take action," he explained. "After this meeting, we will clean up this cemetery. This is a concrete action that we can do to strengthen our connection to the past and to make this occasion memorable for the younger generations". Yard maintenance began just after the lighting of the candles and the ceremony's end.
